3 - The Play of the Game
Once players have placed their bets on the layout, choosing from the myriad possibilities available in front of them, the game is officially ready to begin. The roulette wheel will be spun by the dealer or tourneur who immediately afterwards, will throw the ball in the opposite direction from which the wheel is spinning so that both ball and wheel are racing in opposite directions on the wheel itself.
Players must now get in their last minute wagers for when the ball is about to leave the track, the dealer will announce that bets are no longer permitted. The call of Faites vos jeux, messieurs (Make your bets gentlemen) or Rien ne va Plm (Nothing more goes) are classic in the French speaking casinos.
Once the ball has stopped, the dealer or tourneur will call out the outcome, and a marker will be placed on the number just spun so that all players and dealers can clearly see the winning number.
The dealers will now settle the wagers. Lost bets are collected first by the dealers, and after this is done, all the winning bets will be paid off.
4 - The Chips
Keeping track of one's bets are easy in American roulette games, for each player is issued special chips applicable only to the roulette game at that casino, and these chips are colored, a different color for each player. Ten different players may be represented by, for example, yellow, red, pink, blue, green, black, white, beige, purple and grey chips.
The colored chips are valid and can be used only at the roulette table which issues them. If the table is crowded and no more colors are available, a player may use regular casino chips for his or her bets.
There is no confusion in ownership of the chips this way. Color coding makes life easy at these tables. When a player approaches the roulette table, he exchanges cash or casino chips for an equivalent value in the colored chips, called in the parlance of the game, wheel checks. The value assigned to those colored chips, be it $0.25, $1.00, $5.00 or whatever, is set by the player. Thus, if the player wants to value the chips at $0.25, more chips will be issued from the dealer than if the chips were valued at $1.00.
The dealer will place a coin or marker button on top of the colored chips and place these on the stationary outer rim of the wheel, so that the value of that wheel check is clearly marked.
When a player is ready to leave, he converts the wheel checks back into the regular casino checks with the dealer at that table.
Life is a bit more complicated in the European style game where color coding is not used and bettors simply use casino chips or cash to make their bets. Sometimes, in the confusion of a crowded game, vociferous arguments ensue as players lay identical claim to chips on the felt.
